Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the digestive tract and impacting nearly three million people in the U.S. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are two of the most common forms of IBD. The unpredictable symptoms associated with IBD, which may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, unintended weight loss and fatigue, often create emotional and social challenges for those impacted. Gastroenterology Focus Crohn’s Disease (CD) A chronic, inflammatory bowel disease, CD is characterized by inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms vary from person to person and often fluctuate between active flare-ups and remission. Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Characterized by inflammation of the large intestine, UC is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease. Symptoms range from mild to severe but may make it difficult to keep to a usual routine.

Rheumatic Disease Focus Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) This chronic, autoimmune and inflammatory disease can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of joint function. RA can cause tissue damage that can lead to chronic pain, lack of balance and physical deformities. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) PsA is a chronic disease that can cause inflammation in the joints, tendons and/or ligaments. It affects about 30 percent of people who have psoriasis. The impact on quality of life is similar to RA, but PsA often lacks resources for ideal diagnosis, symptoms, treatment and research into the disease understanding. Spondyloarthritis (SpA) SpA comprises arthritic conditions that affect the spine and joints, including ankylosing spondylitis and axial spondyloarthritis. Axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA) A chronic, inflammatory condition, axSpA consists of two subsets that have been clinically defined as ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA). AS is an inflammatory disease that causes bones in the spine to fuse over time, and it is more common in men than women. Nr-axSpA is a chronic inflammatory disease, causing inflammation of tissues within the spine and resulting in swelling, stiffness and pain. Signs of nr-axSpA can be difficult to test, often resulting in delays in diagnosis. Uveitis (UV) This group of eye diseases is characterized by inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. Early diagnosis and treatment are important as uveitis can be serious, leading to permanent vision loss. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) The most common type of lupus, especially among women, this immune-mediated disease is associated with inflammation of multiple organ systems. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) JIA is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in childhood. For patients living with JIA, early diagnosis and treatment are critical.

Dermatology Focus Psoriasis (PsO) This chronic disease of the immune system triggers skin inflammation and causes skin cells to be produced faster than normal, forming the thick, red, itchy, flaky patches known as plaques. People with psoriasis can experience negative impacts on mental health and well-being, including shame, anger and worry, as well as difficulties with daily activities that can impact their quality of life. Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Hidradenitis suppurativa, also known as acne inversa, is a condition that causes painful skin lumps, which are often mistaken for pimples and cysts. These lumps are typically found near hair follicles around sweat glands, including the groin, breasts and armpits. Without treatment, the condition can worsen and cause abscesses, or pockets of pus, that can break open and form scars, and may also lead to the formation of tunnels under the skin, called sinus tracts. Hidradenitis suppurativa can have long-term impacts, including decreased mobility due to scarring and chronic intense pain. An estimated 1% of the U.S. population is living with hidradenitis suppurativa and women are three times more likely than men to develop the condition. A chronic, inflammatory disease, HS can be challenging to diagnose and, as a progressive disease, can increase in severity over time with irreversible skin damage and unbearable pain. Atopic Dermatitis (AD) A chronic, inflammatory disease, AD is characterized by intense itching, oozing and crusting, redness, skin erosion and dry skin. Beyond the skin, AD can have a holistic impact on patients’ lives due to sleep disturbances, decreases in work productivity, and mental health effects that patients may face, especially during flare-ups, which can lead to low energy levels and decreased quality of life. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) A type of inflammatory arthritis that triggers joint pain, stiffness and swelling. About 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis.

Systemic sclerosis is a rare autoimmune condition that affects connective tissue in the body, typically causing the skin to thicken and tighten. The disease can impact other organs and commonly manifests as interstitial lung disease, which affects the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs. Interstitial lung disease caused by systemic sclerosis is known as scleroderma-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). Systemic sclerosis impacts approximately 100,000 people in the U.S., with interstitial lung disease occurring in more than half and often associated with a poor prognosis.
